For a while now I’ve had a few homemade ruined 40k buildings to litter the battle field, mostly designed to either block line of sight, or to give a vertical aspect of the game. Both of which were needed during the recent campaign of death that my Astra Militarum boys faced against the Orks.
The buildings fit perfectly into the apocalyptic battlefield but they do bring large swathes of greyness to the table. That combined with the fact two of my armies are grey (Necrons and Grey Knights), I decided to add a bit of colour with some tiny war propaganda posters.
This is the problem I faced:
However a quick Google search for “40K propaganda posters”, and variants thereof, combined with a few minutes in Photoshop I came up with a printed sheet of tiny pro-war pictures. Please note I don’t take credit for these images, they’re 99% the work of others.
I had several sheets of full A4 labels, so I printed on them and then hit the sheets with a blast of sealant. After it was dried I applied them individual to the buildings and covered the corners with a few dabs of superglue. To get a bit of roughness and to hopefully help age the images, I hacked at them for a bit with the back of my knife.
This ‘roughing up’ worked well as I then splashed some washes on the images and it got into the new crevasses and generally weathered the pictures.
Now my ruins have a bit of war-torn colour added to them. Not bad for an evenings work in front of the box too.
Tonight we continued the second half of our Treta mission. The Orks had pressed quickly and firmly into the city boundaries of Treta, forcing the Cadian Militarum deeper into their defences. Last time we finished as the Chimera’s arrived, the Gorkanaut exploded and the Ork bomber was causing serious carnage.
The mission continues with turn 4…
The Orks immediately stepped up their game with their airborne unit dropping a precision bomb straight between the Chimera and Manticore, penetrating both of their armour and stunning both crews. The pintel mounted bolter, grasped by the tank commander only seconds earlier, was ripped off its mounting by the shock wave.
This was followed by a daring charge from the nearby Boyz, whom had just rallied from the previous torrent flamers psychological torment. With several slashes and punches, the Nob boss used his power klaws to access and destroy the Manticores power plant. As the crew attempted to clamber out of the darkness of the hull, the only thing they found was their own demise at the clutches of the klaws.
The Hellhound, immobilised and stunned from earlier, fared no better. From the nearby copse of trees, two killa kans lumbered towards the ‘hounds vulnerable rear armour. Despite deflecting a shot from the looted wagon, the vehicle was torn in half at the mercy of the killa kans close quarters weapons. The crew went down with the vehicle as the flammable fuel for the weapons ignited before they could escape.
In the centre of the table the Gretchen had finally made it to the refinery roof and immediately began pouring down shots onto the Ratlings. Even from their elevated position, the Ratlings had little room to shelter from this new threat and lost 2 more camo-clad men.
Over on the right a distinct and rather unplanned crack of energy erupted as the shokk attack gun fired a devastating shot at the lascannon crew. The crew’s fortified position gave no protection from the death a twisting vortex blast brought. They were torn atom from atom within a millisecond of the Ork squeezing the trigger, never knowing what hit them.
The crew of the Leman Russ below them caught the edge of the vortex, severing key systems within the vehicle and disorientating the experienced team within. Before they could take evasive manoeuvres against the swirling powers of the vortex, two power klaws pierced the side of the hull and detonated the remaining ammo stored in the hull. The owners of those klaws, 2 gigantic Ork Boyz in ‘eavy armour, now held objective 1.
The Cadian’s attempted a retaliation, but licking their wounds they found themselves 3 tanks down in a single turn. A further 4th tank was severely damaged and already had a weapon damaged.
Knowing they could not stop the tide of green, the force separated into a left and right ‘last-stand’ position.
On the right, led by the Commissioner, the Command Squad and a full infantry squad moved in to sweep the Ork Boyz off objective 1. A blast from a heavy flamer and the Commissioner’s plasma pistol did little to deter the 2 Orks. Thankfully by sheer weight of numbers, a full infantry squad firing at rapid fire managed to knock of a single wound from the front-most Ork, despite requiring an awkward shot through a distant window.
The Chimera on the right fired at the Warboss, missing him and his whole squad woefully.
Alone and surrounded, the remaining Ratling made a desperate attempt to vanquish the shokk attack gunner. Trembling with the sight of savage green-skins all around him, his long range shot missed.
Back over on the left, the Chimera fired desperately at the power klaw clad Ork Boy squad. Although only one of them had klaws, he was surrounded by a significant green shield. 2 infantry squads also joined the fire fight, slaying all but 2 of the Orks. As they fled back towards objective 5 and the safety of their other kind, the Cadian’s were distraught to see the Boy with the power klaws was one of the survivors.
Knowing their time was likely coming to its end, the rallied mortar squad fired desperately from their exposed position. Targeting the shokk attack gunner, their indirect fire caused only one hit. However the Ork seemingly just shrugged off the anti-personnel round and continued his tyranny of fire.
Seemingly before it had even started, the Militarum turn was over. So few of the loyal Cadian’s remained amongst the ruins. Would it be enough though.
In the middle of the table; alerted by the sound overhead the Warboss and his squad moved around objective 3 so they had line of sight on the remaining Ratling. At this range they made short work of his cover and the lifeless body of the last Ratling crumpled to the dusty ruin’s floor.
The 2 remaining Ork Boyz, whom had only just fled, now rallied and charged right back at the Chimera. Cheered up by the Ork Boyz on objective 5.
The Killa Kanz stomped through the forest and targeted the Cadian infantry positioned on the first floor of the nearby building. Despite the tight angle and cover the building offered, several more Cadian’s fell where they stood as kustom mega blasters reduced the building to little more than ruins.
Reaching the front armour of the Chimera, the Ork with the power klaw pounded and tore at the metal skin. Quickly finding an exhaust port he slammed his klaw inside, detonating the multi-laser transformer array within. The resulting explosion not only entirely destroyed the Chimera, but also obliterated both Orks and over half the nearby infantry squad nearby.
The Blitz Bomma banked sharply, preventing it leaving the theatre of war; its new heading taking it back towards the Ork deployment area within the forest. Thankfully for the Cadian this meant it was likely out of the way for the remainder of the game. A very thin silver lining indeed.
On the outskirts of the forest, the Shokk Attack gunner finally had to move to a new firing position. This thankfully stopped him from firing for a turn. On top of this, the vortex continued to spin and tear at the landscape but moved further away from objective 1 and the Cadian HQ.
On the right hand side of the table, the two Boyz in ‘eavy armour now fired two skorchas upon the Commissioner squad. Sensing a hit on the Commissioner himself, the heavy flamer veteran gave his life to protect the leader. Nearby, the veteran medic managed to absorb the remaining hits, quickly and effectively patching himself up after 3 wounds.
The Orks then charged the 2 remaining members of the HQ. Overwatch delt out a wound as one of the Orks caught a plasma shot to the torso, but they managed their short charge distance. After a whirring of klaws and Cadian close quarters weapons, one Ork has fallen as well as the medic.
Dangerously low on options, the Cadians then sprung into action (albeit not much!).
A squad of nearby infantry left objective 2 and headed to the Commissioner’s aid. They had to protect the Commissioner but also clear objective 1 of the Orks. It was an all or nothing charge.
Fearing another possible vortex shot, the Chimera at objective 2 moved into cover of the ruins and lined up all its weapons upon the green-skin. They fired will all of their might but couldn’t land any pain.
At objective 4 the Cadian infantry, now totalling only 8 men amongst both squads, poured fired on the advancing Ork Warboss and his Nobs. A single wound was made but that didnt even kill off the Nob.
The mortars, now actioning the ‘danger close’ protocol, fired upon the Warboss. Scoring 2 more wounds and slaying a single Nob in the process.
Back over at the Commissioner, close combat started. Thankfully the Cadian acted first. The Commissioner acted first, however his plasma pistol casing had been comprimised blocking an earlier blow. When he squeezed the trigger the entire device exploded in plasma, taking the commissioner with it. Filled with rage, the Cadian infantry piled in and surprisingly dispatched the final Ork at objective 1.
After only a few minutes the turn was up. The entire remaining Cadian force had only managed to kill 2 Orks their whole turn. On top of that their Commissioner had died from a self inflicted Gets Hot wound. Grrr.
Would there even be any Militarum left for their final turn?!
The Orks made their final push onto objective 4, the only one they could hope in taking on their final turn.
The Killa Kans made a beeline for the remaining pockets of infantry, while the Warboss Nobs detached from their leader and headed straight for objective 4. They’d have to run for it, but they might just make it.
A full squad of Orks from objective 5 fired at the Militarum infantry from their flank. Joined in by a truck that had largely been quiet after turn 1. The Cadian’s started dropping. All we needed was one man to remain and objective 4 would be contested and the Ork’s couldn’t claim it.
The looted wagon, unable to see the contesting infantry, fired wildly onto the mortar teams. A painful direct hit removed both mortar teams from the table in an instant. It was looking like the Militarum wouldn’t end up having anyone on the left hand side of the table
The Killa Kans now moved up within charging range of the contesting infantry. They fired their deadly kustom mega blasters and removed the entire squad! Combined with a good charge from the Nob Boys meant objective 4 fell into the Ork hands on their very large turn.
To make matters worse (if it could be), the remaining 2 infantry men hidden behind cover failed their moral check. They fled from the Orks, but apparently not with much haste. They were 4 inches away from the edge of the table but managed to run only 3! Meaning the Militarum would still have someone alive on the left hand side of the table.
Immediately the fleeing infantry boys rallied, they fired both of their lasguns to their full potential but it was a fruitless effort. They needed to kill the front-runner in the nearby Ork squad to relinquish the objective, but the odds were rightfully stacked against them.
The Chimera on the right was also too far away to intervene or even get a shot on to objective 4. They fired onto the far Orks in rage, racking up a few pointless causalities.
The infantry squad, whom had just seen their commissioner explode beside them, marched on to hunker down on objective 1, unkowing of the chaos that had occured on the left hand flank.
The Cadian fight was over.
And so the game ended with the Cadians only holding objective 1 while the Orks held objectives 3, 4 and 5. A minor victory for the Orks. The Militarum took approximately 85% causalities and were close to being swept off of Treta’s streets altogether. The green-skins took only 50% causalities, with several vehicles and the Warboss still alive.
Therefore the Orks push further into the city and towards victory over the Militarum in Treta.
With the Orks tying for victory in our recent epic mission of siege the relic; Orks vs Space Marines vs Astra Militarum; the following communication was intercepted and translated from brutish Ork (Submitted by Andy P)
So ere’s ow it went, a bunch of them puny umans rocked up, some wearing tough blue skin, the others well, they was dead squishy. They was well up for grabbing one of our big meks bits of gubbins for sum reason, but we wasn’t avin none of it. Grotsnag the mekboy was bringing some toys to da fight, so to not get well killed straight off (cos dem umans was a bit shooty, although the dakka weren’t all that) we kept to a corner, but boss Gutbleeda had a kunnin plan, well that’s what his grot “Baldrik” said anyways… The umans got the drop on us and started to move forward, well the blue ones did, the squishy one hid like a bunch a snotlins. Grotsnag fired up iz shokk attak gun he aimed it proper, fings was looking good, den der was dis oooooge bang, and all that was left was sum boots, most of us finks Grotsnag bottled it, but I rekons he blewed imself up.
Anyways Skullkruncha and iz boys zoomed forward on der truk, but dem blue boys killed da trukk wiv der flyin do dat, but Skullkruncha being a promising sort just legged it towardz da relic. Den rarvur amusingly day blue boys and da squishy ones started killing each over, wiv der tanks, it was a sight to behold and we well enjoyed it loads, speshully when da squishy ones called in some elp from da cruisers up in space wiv da big dakka. Skuzzgob da painboy and iz ladz den legged it forward wiv an idea about avin a punch up wiv da squishy ones on our right, dey shot at us with der lazer pointers but dey only killed a few boyz so was totally worth it.
Da boyz from da trukk along wiv Gutbleedas unit den legged it forward wiv Skullkrunchas lads taking da prize, we was all well chuffed. It was den dat der dirty blue buggerz Boss came at Gutbleeda and iz lads, I fink e made a rarvur big mistake cos Gutbleeda did just dat and gutted im infront of iz lads, laugh we all nearly cried it was so funny. But den the ded ard blue boys in da mega armour minced up Skullkrusha and is lads, it was a bit sad, but they shoulda legged it quicker. It was den dat da boss disappeared under mysterious sircumstanzes, der was a big boom and lots a smoke, and again just some boots laying there, we reckons e legged it off with Grotsnag for an early dinner.
Skuzzgob den laid into da first unit of squishy umans, dey didn’t put up much of a fight, dey die real easy, so dey carried on after da squishy boss, scaring em away, to da point we was well behind der linez, we found lotz of imperialz gubbins to kustomiz ar stuff. Finally big berfa got in on fings ( I fink da mek needs to work on making da gunz more killy) squelching da blue mega armour boyz , and den well sneeky like da squishy ones tank ad a pop from behind, so berfa turned round and ripped of its turret in a well crunchy manner. Da umans then seemd to get scared and ran away from den on, I reckonz given anova hour we coulda ad em all, but as waz we ad a damn good day out killin stuff and shooting lotsa dakka.
As the sun rose through the lush green leaves, the stillness in the air was shattered by the war chants of the crazed green-skinned Orks. From their position in the depths of the Keil’s forest, they now charged straight for the city boundary of Treta. Startled by enemies at their back-door, a small company of Cadian Astra Militarum men, resting from their victorious efforts at the cities’ Amber Gate, now clambered to their feet and dashed for cover.
That is how this battle started; the orks deployed on the outskirts of the forest that surrounds the southern quadrant of the city of Treta. The Cadian force, smaller in size but surrounded with better cover and concealment opportunities, had to hold the Orks off from taken the 5 objectives. If the Orks finished the game with 4 or 5 objectives, a major Ork victory would be declared. 2 or 3 objectives would give them a minor victory, while anything less would be a tactical win for the Cadian troops.
The Orks had a Blitz Bommer but thankfully they had to keep it in reserve – I really didn’t want the Cadians coming under the bomb sights of that too soon. I decided from past experience to keep 2 Chimera’s full of troops in reserve; this would give me the flexibility of deploying them later on, in the gaps that would no doubt follow!
The Ratlings infiltrated into the centre tall building, giving the 7 strong team good sights over the entire table as well as good cover. The snipers, combined with some great cover and firing positions for the lascannon team and Leman Russ – I was confident we’d be slaying some Ork’s pretty soon…
Unfortunately the Ork Deff Koptas were able to scout ahead at the beginning and then immediately swoop down onto my Leman Russ in turn one. Quickly bringing the fight to me!
On the left side of the table, 2 Ork trucks (1, a looted Hellhound) and a squad of Storm Boyz quickly ate up the distance separating the two armies. A ruin and a small copse of tree’s masked their arrival. The Ork passengers sprayed a solid wall of death onto my Platoon Command Squad on objective 5, forcing them to ground but still taking multiple casualties. Across the table at the other side, a explosion of colour and light lit up the buildings as the shokk attack gun fired but narrowly missed its target. The Cadian Command HQ were just gathering themselves from the warp attack when they received a direct hit from the Gorkanaut – slaying 3 of its members instantly. Importantly here, not only did I forget they had camo (+1 cover) AND Feel No Pain, but the Ork’s had managed to slay my Master of Ordnance. Sad times!
Back in the centre of the table, a well placed shot from the Ork looted wagon shredded several Ratlings, their cover being wildly insufficent. Cadian’s were dying left, right and centre!
Thankfully it was finally time for the Militarum to respond – and we started strong! The Hellhound tank sped towards the trees before turning its turret and firing a torrent of flame down upon both approaching trucks and the Storm Boyz. The boyz, with their attached rocket packs, instantly exploded as the air around them became super heated. Both trucks lost hull points, with one losing a second (and its weapon) to a follow up melta attack. Also at this point, I forgot that opened top vehicles receive a +1 on the damage table… do’h!
The Ratlings, down to only 3 guys already, fired at the Warboss but failed to land any damaging hits. This failure was then mirrored by the lascannon squad failing to hit the Gorkanaut with any of their 3 heavy weapons. Shocking! The mortar squad landed a few hits, killing an insignificant number of Ork’s – no-one important.
The Leman Russ didn’t do much better, although did squeeze a single point of damage against the lumbering Gorkanaut. On top of this, all order requests failed! Grrrr.
The Orks responded by calling in their crazed Blitz dive Bommer, whom immediately went to work and swept down upon the Russ and Commander Yarrick. In a blaze of rapid, bullet lobbing, gunfire, Yarrick was slain in a single swift role of the dice! The Deff Koptas flew over his lifeless body to attack my units from the rear, however failed to breach the thick Russ armour.
Back on the left side, Ork’s started springing from their trucks and dashing towards objective 5. Despite their best efforts the small Platoon squad, outnumbered somewhere in the region of 3 to 1, were quickly eradicated the approaching green skins.
The wagon fired once again at the aloft Ratling snipers; however this time the gunning mechanism swung wildly on its axis and 3 friendly Ork killa cans received hits to their rear armour. Sadly for the Cadian, none of the green-on-green fire caused any long lasting damage.
The Warboss and his squad of Nobs sprang through a gap in a wall to take objective 3. Thankfully their proximity to the Ratlings forced the shokk attack gun from firing in that direction, sparing the snipers from taking even more casualties. High up in their building, the Ratlings went to ground, attempting to maximise their survivability.
The Gorkanaut, still lumbering forward from the forest edge, fired into the depths of a Cadian squad caught out in the open. In a hail of bullets and crude rockets, several infantrymen perished despite the Sergeant ordering them to ground.
The Cadian lascannon squad quickly responded to the death of their comrades by lighting up the Gorkanaut with multiple shots; however their shots were dwarfed by a gigantic explosion upon the Gorkanauts hull as a Manticore missile tore large chunks of metal from its armour. Several nearby Orks, sheltering behind the metallic beast, we’re peppered with burning twisted metal. Seizing the opportunity, the Leman Russ fired all its weapons at the burning Gorkanaut. As the smoke cleared, the gigantic mechanised fortress shuddered to a stop, immobilised and crew stunned.
Back across the battlefield, the Imperial Hellhound incinerated several more Ork boyz as they stood around objective 5 cheering. Caught in the firery torrent, a nearby Ork truck also burst into fire and slowed to a halt. Continuing to receive small arms fire, the Ork boyz, already tormented by the visions of the burning squad mates, now turned and fled for the safety of the forest. Objective 5 was out of their green grubby hands!
Passing their fleeing kind, a second squad of Boyz quickly retook objective 5 and fired on a second Platoon Command unit. Retaliating fire from the Cadian made little inrodes into the flanks of greens skins now that they were in the safety of a ruin.
The Blitz Bommer banked sharply, dropping bombs onto the dug-ig mortars squad. High speed ordnance met ammo boxes and detonated in multiple bright red flashes, slaying one team before they could take cover. With their own ammo now exploding around them, the remaining two teams scrambled over the ruins and ran for safety.
Amidst the explosions, the ground the crumbling Cadian force were stood on continued shaking – marking the Chimera’s arrival amongst the buildings and fallen comrades. They instantly deploying 20 reinforcements of infantry who started firing calmly and uniformly at the ever-closer Ork units. The concentrated fire of multi-lasers and bolters from the Chimera’s, seemingly catching the Orks off guard, sent 2 Deff Koptas and 1 Killa Kan to their graves. Even a few of the Warboss’ Nobs were slain by lasgun fire, weakening their strong grip on objective 3.
With green-skins breathing down on the flank of the Manticore’s armour, it let fly with a devastating payload. Seconds after launch, the targeted Gorkanaut across the table exploded in a mass of flames. Mechanised limbs and Ork crew were vaporised in a vibrant flash of white and yellow. Smoke bellowed from the beast as three huge Ork Nobs in layers of thick armour and armed to the teeth, clambered from the wreckage.
The lascannon team once again opened fire yet hit nothing!
Enraged with the destruction of the Gorkanaut (or the fact they now had to run) they made a beeline for the Leman Russ. Hearing the launch of the Manticore missile over the vox network, the Russ crew had already readied their guns on the bay doors of the Gorkanaut. As the 3 Orks charged down the Russ they were hit with volley after volley of shots. One Ork fell immediately yet two lumbered on, seemingly ignoring the large wounds their twisted bodies now showed.
Halfway through the 6 turns, the Ork’s were already sporting a minor victory. Will the arrival of the Chimera’s turn the tide for the Cadian’s? Will the destruction of the Gorkanaut spur the green-skins on to a rage fuelled fight amongst the ruins? Can the lascannon team start hitting their targets or will the Blitz Bommer continue racking up kills?
The Ultramarines started on one corner of the battlefield. This side offered good cover but slow progress to the relic due to the woods and difficult terrain. Ideally they would have got there first and retreated with the relic in hand. As it was they got there second but an 11 inch terminator charge ensured that it was quickly recovered from the ork scouting party. The space marine commander hadn’t accounted for the terminators making their charge and was somewhat out of position when the Ork Warlord came onto the scene. Despite his artificer armour it only look one swipe from the power claw to crush him.
The vindicare assassin was a constant danger from his excellent vantage point. He got first blood by blowing up the Imperial guard chimera. He kept his eye out for more valuable targets but both enemy commanders stayed out of his sight until he was taken out by a Lemon Russ lascannon.
One landspeeder proved a thorn to the orks as it wrecked a truck and half a squad, attempting in vain to slow them down. The other landspeeder got into position to multi melta the lemon Russ but missed. It hit it the flowing turn only for the tank to make a 6+ cover save from it’s camo nets. 2 squads of space marines were providing decent cover for the terminators who were proving dominant against both the imperial guard and orks. After destroying the ork squad with the relic they picked it up and were funnelled towards the gaukanaut by the fast approaching guardsmen. The terminators held their own against it, losing a couple of men but also taking a couple of hp off it. They lost round 2 and retreated which was actually quite useful. By now a single member of the squad remained but time was running out.
Unfortunately with virtually the last shot of the game he rolled a one for his save and dropped the relic. Space marine victory tally drops from 4 to 1 right at the last, a cruel blow.
